FREE · OPEN SOURCE · HABIT RPG
Habitica turns habits, dailies and to-dos into a retro role-playing game. Tick something off and you earn gold and experience. Skip a daily and your character takes damage — for real, in the morning.
Free to use, with optional subscription and cosmetic purchases. Also runs in the browser with the same account.
THE MECHANIC
Most habit apps have one primitive: a checkbox. Habitica has three, and the distinction is the reason it fits some people better than a plain tracker — particularly people who find ordinary lists impossible to stick to.
Things you do at irregular times. No schedule, no streak — just a plus and a minus.
The ones with teeth. Scheduled by weekday, and if you miss them, your character loses health overnight.
One-off tasks with optional due dates and checklists. They never hurt you, they just sit there aging.
READ THIS FIRST
The health mechanic is the whole point and also the main reason people uninstall. If failing a checkbox already makes you feel bad, an app that punishes you with a red bar and a dead avatar can make that worse rather than better.
SOCIAL LAYER
Parties are the feature people stay for. You join up with a few friends and fight a boss together — but the boss takes damage when you complete your real tasks, and it hits the whole party when someone slacks. Shared accountability, disguised as a dungeon.
Yes, and open source. There is an optional subscription and cosmetic purchases; none of them are required to use the core app.
No. You lose a level and a piece of equipment. Your tasks and history stay.
Partially. It syncs with a server, so a long stretch offline can cause conflicts. It is not built for offline-first use.
Plenty of people do — treating it as a plain habit and reward tracker and ignoring the avatar entirely.
START
The most common mistake is filling the list on day one. Three dailies you will actually do beats twenty that will beat you up by Thursday.
